Recently there has been an increase in media attention on bullying behavior and its consequences, following on the heels of well-publicized shootings at lower level schools. Several books in the trade literature have appeared as well as guides for parents on what to do when your child is bullied, and some intervention techniques aimed at classroom teachers who may witness bullies and bullying.
There are also several older European books on the subject, none of which address the issues highlighted by happenings in the US. There has been little in the way of research-based books on who bullies are, why they bully other children, how bullying is related to self-esteem & aggression, how the school environment impacts bullying behavior, etc. This book brings together the disparate research occuring in school, education, and psychology literature to offer a more comprehensive treatise on research based findings in this area.
