Learning from Teacher Research

Despite many hours in the classroom, many school students have poor learning skills. Few teachers know how to stimulate all their students to become active and purposeful learners. And most teachers find that academic research is too theoretical for the 'messy' world of the classroom.

To overcome this gap between research and practice, teachers and academic researchers in the long-running PEEL project based at Monash University have been working collaboratively to identify ways to improve teaching practice and student learning. This book gathers research teachers have undertaken on challenges they have faced in their classrooms, and outlines solutions they have developed.

These experienced primary and secondary teachers used action research to tackle challenges they faced with core pedagogical concerns such as helping students develop their writing skills, using homework effectively, motivating unwilling students, encouraging active learning and matching assessment to teaching strategies. Each of these examples offers teachers techniques for improving their classroom skills, as well as a model for classroom-based research.Learning from Teacher Research is a valuable resource for any teacher who wants to use reflective practice to develop their skills.

Corpora and Language Teaching

Corpora have changed our views on language and language use and we can also expect to find them in the class-room. It is not only ‘raw’ corpora which are of interest but corpora come with user-friendly programs and software which makes them suitable for the use by learners.

However it is clear that there are also problems and that we do not know enough about how learners and teachers experience the use of corpora in the classroom. When should corpora be used as part of the teaching of a language? How should they be used? What should be the proper balance between the corpus-based approach and more traditional classroom methods? Are corpora good for all kinds of students?

Beyond Methods - Macrostrategies for Language Teaching

In this original book, B. Kumaravadivelu presents a macrostrategic framework designed to help both beginning and experienced teachers develop a systematic, coherent, and personal theory of practice. His book provides the tools a teacher needs in order to self-observe, self-analyze, and self-evaluate his or her own teaching acts.

The framework consists of ten macrostrategies based on current theoretical, empirical, and experiential knowledge of second language and foreign language teaching. These strategies enable teachers to evaluate classroom practices and to generate techniques and activities for realizing teaching goals. With checklists, surveys, projects and reflective tasks to encourage critical thinking, the book is both practical and accessible. Teachers and future teachers, researchers, and teacher educators will find the volume indispensable.

Article Usage by John Kohl and Susan Katz

The articles “a,” “an,” and “the”are difficult for many non-native speakers of English to learn to use properly.

Some of the rules that govern article usage are very subtle; only years of experience with the language will enable you to understand and apply these rules. However, Table 3 will help you eliminate many errors in article usage from your writing. In order to use Table 3, however, you have to understand two concepts: countability and definiteness.

These concepts are explained in detail below. The last part of this handout, beginning on page 7, discusses article usage with proper nouns as well as the difference between “a” and “an.” At the very end of the handout is an exercise that you can do to test your understanding.

When information is transferred from an engagement domain system to a force domain command and control system, it will be automatically or manually converted to the force domain symbols in this pulication.

An Introduction to Early Modern English (Edinburgh Textbooks on the English Language)

An Introduction to Early Modern English, helps students of English and linguistics to place the language of the period 1500-1700 in its historical context as a language with a common core but also one which varies across time, regionally and socially, and according to register.

The volume focuses on the structure of what contemporaries called the General Dialect--its spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation--and on its dialectal origins. The book also discusses the language situation and linguistic anxieties in England at a time when Latin exerted a strong influence on the rising standard language.
