Fundamental Texts on European Private Law

Among the most significant legal developments of our time is the emergence of a European private law. The European Union enacts directives which profoundly affect the practice, teaching and study of core areas of 'classical' private law. Internationally commissions have formulated principles of European trusts, contract and commercial law. Furthermore, uniform private law can be found in a number of international conventions.

This book gathers together fundamental texts from these three sources into one convenient volume. Its emphasis is on general civil and commercial law, particularly on the obligations and property aspects of these. Fully updated, it contains the recent directives in the areas of E-Commerce, Electronic Signatures and Late Payments. It also makes available for the first time English language versions of a number of texts by international commissions.

This book is a sister volume to the original German and the subsequent Spanish version. With full references to the implementation of the directives in Denmark, EIRE, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom, this book will be a useful resource for practitioners, students and teachers working in the field of European private law.

This book uses yet another lens to examin differentiation and support its implementation in classrooms. It presents educators with a series of actual curricular units developed by teachers who work hard to differentiate instruction in high school classrooms.

The book thus moves from defining and describing differentiation to providing the actual curriculum used to differentiate instruction.

Understanding Reading - A Psycholinguistic Analysis of Reading and Learning to Read 6th Edition

Understanding Reading revolutionized reading research and theory when the first edition appeared in 1971 and continues to be a leader in the field. In the sixth edition of this classic text, Smith's purpose remains the same: to shed light on fundamental aspects of the complex human act of reading--linguistic, physiological, psychological, and social--and on what is involved in learning to read.

The text critically examines current theories, instructional practices, and controversies, covering a wide range of disciplines but always remaining accessible to students and classroom teachers. Careful attention is given to the ideological clash that continues between whole language and direct instruction and currently permeates every aspect of theory and research into reading and reading instruction.

- Presentation of language functions (thanking, agreeing, disagreeing, inviting, etc.) in both formal and informal situations
- Informative readings on the cultural 'rules' students need to know in real-life situations
- Exercises and role plays for pairs and small groups, to encourage interaction
- Short recorded dialogues, which expose students to a range of American accents and levels of formality. Speaking Naturally can be used as a classroom text, as a supplementary text, and for self-study.

One to One - A Teacher Handbook

One to One is the first teachers' book to address the problems and develop a methodology for the small group and one-to-one situation.

As a result of his wide ESP experience, the author, Peter Wilberg, has created a coherent approach in this neglected area. He outlines the positive aspects of the one-to-one situation and shows that it is the most natural and potentially most efficient way of learning.

One to One creates a comprehensive theory, and develops this fully into practical teaching materials and ideas.

Metaphor in Context

The many philosophers, linguists, and cognitive scientists writing on metaphor over the past two decades have generally taken for granted that metaphor lies outside, if not in opposition to, received conceptions of semantics and grammar.

Assuming that metaphor cannot be explained by or within semantics, they claim that metaphor has little, if anything, to teach us about semantic theory.

Higher Lessons In English - A Work On English Grammar And Composition

During the years in which "Higher Lessons" has been in existence, we have ourselves had an instructive experience with it in the classroom. We have considered hundreds of suggestive letters written us by intelligent teachers using the book. We have examined the best works on grammar that have been published recently here and in England.

And we have done more. We have gone to the original source of all valid authority in our language - the best writers and speakers of it. That we might ascertain what present linguistic usage is, we chose fifty authors, now alive or living till recently, and have carefully read three hundred pages of each. We have minutely noted and recorded what these men by habitual use declare to be good English.

Check It Again! by Matt Purland

All of the examples in this book are adapted from actual examples of English that I have spotted during the past twelve months. This is English as written by people who speak and write English as their first language (and, no doubt in many cases, their only language).

Educated people. People who have, in most cases, enjoyed as many as sixteen years of full-time education. People who have been to university and graduated with first- and second-class degrees. People who have achieved high-paying jobs in advertising and marketing without ever really fully understanding the possessive role of the apostrophe.

This is English that is looking for an audience, be it an advert, travel book or leaflet, newspaper article or website. These examples all come from texts that have been designed to communicate with more than one person. Perhaps this makes the mistakes more surprising.

Many of these mistakes – perhaps even the majority – could have been avoided if their authors had checked and rechecked their work before publishing it or sending it off to be printed. By doing so they would have improved the level of communication (the primary aim of any piece of writing – to tell the reader something) and avoided making the organisation they represent look less professional.
