Techniques Of Novel Writing - A. S. Burack

The wide variety of approaches to novel writing presented here by forty successful novelists demonstrates that there is no one way to write a novel. In fact, almost every novelist in this book uses a different technique.

Some writers start with a character or setting; others with plot or a theme. Some follow an outline; others have no idea of how the book will end when they start to write; and still others have the end firmly in mind—even written down—before they begin, and practically write the book backward.

The important point is that among these different writing techniques, there may be one that will be just right for you. No matter how different the methods of the novelists in this book, the results—their novels—are successful with readers and critics.

Slide and Slurp, Scratch and Burp - More About Verbs

One book is never enough to explore the wide range of verbs! The crazy cats deliver loads of additional examples to illustrate the power of both action verbs and linking verbs.

Brian P. Cleary's playful verse and Brian Gable's comical cats turn traditional grammar lessons on end. Each verb is printed in color for easy identification. Read this book aloud and share the delight of the sense and nonsense of words.

Science for Primary School Teachers

This book is intended to be a core text for primary school teachers in training, induction and beyond. It is primarily aimed at those who are not science specialists, providing them with an accessible and useful tool to enable them to gain confidence in their ability to teach science successfully.

Leadership for Differentiating Schools and Classrooms

Try going a week without hearing a call for a massive overhaul of our educational system. Parents, students, educators, bureaucrats, pundits . . . everyone says something must be done. But what? And who should do it? In this environment, school leaders must build bridges for change.

As the system now stands, many students spend great portions of their lives feeling inferior if they struggle, invisible if they already know the material, problematic if they're not a child of the dominant culture, and perverse if they question the school agenda. This book explores how school leaders can develop responsive, personalized, and differentiated classrooms.

Lazily, Crazily, Just a Bit Nasally - More About Adverbs

One book is never enough to explore the incredibly wide range of adverbs! The goofy cats crazily deliver loads of additional examples to entertaningly illustrate the power of adverbs, including phrasal adverbs.

Brian P. Cleary's playful verse and Brian Gable's comical cats magically turn traditional grammar lessons on end. Each adverb is cleverly color coded to help readers identify adverbs of manner, adverbs of time, and more. Read this book aloud and share the delight of the sense--and nonsense--of words.

Beyond Grammar - An Experience-Based Theory of Language

During the last few years, a new approach to linguistic analysis has started to emerge.

This approach, which has come to be known under various labels such as 'data-oriented parsing' (DOP), 'corpus-based interpretation' and 'treebank grammar', assumes that human language comprehension and production works with representations of concrete past language experiences rather than with abstract grammatical rules.

Action Research in Teaching and Learning

Action Research in Teaching and Learning: A practical guide to conducting pedagogical research in universities The book is organised into two sections: the theoretical and the practical, either of which can be read independently, so for those of you who are keen to get on with the practical aspects of doing an action research study, a good starting point is Chapter 5.

If you already have a fair amount of experience with action research but would like some theoretical underpinnings, you may prefer to start with Chapter 1. In this first section, which includes Chapters 1 to 4, I make a case for pedagogical action research in higher education where there is still an uncomfortable divide between research and teaching, and where the former is more highly rewarded.

I have spent some time on this as I have found that in the highly competitive academic research world, you need to be able to justify and defend any research activity which might not be recognised as ‘mainstream’. In keeping with the overall aim of this being a practical book, I have incorporated some reflective questions in each of these chapters.

Understanding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects approximately 5 percent of American school-age children. In a classroom of thirty, it is likely that at least one child will have ADHD.

Understanding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a concise, clearly written overview of the condition’s symptoms and the range of possible treatments.

Chapters explain:
- How certain behavioral patterns can be misdiagnosed as ADHD
- How early diagnosis and treatment of the condition is critical
- How the various forms of the condition affect a child’s psychology and socialization
- How parents can help to address the condition effectively

Understanding ADHD provides useful, up-to-date information on a condition that can be treated with early diagnosis and intervention.

The book will prove useful to professionals and parents seeking a better understanding of children and childhood development.

Teaching Language as Communication

It will stimulate all language teachers to investigate the ideas that inform their own practice.

Structural Analysis (7th Edition)-Solution-Manual

This book provides students with a clear and thorough presentation of the theory and application of structural analysis as it applies to trusses, beams, and frames. Emphases are placed on teaching readers to both model and analyze a structure.

A hallmark of the book, Procedures for Analysis, has been retained in this edition to provide learners with a logical, orderly method to follow when applying theory.

Chapter topics include types of structures and loads, analysis of statically determinate structures, analysis of statically determinate trusses, internal loadings developed in structural members, cables and arches, influence lines for statically determinate structures, approximate analysis of statically indeterminate structures, deflections, analysis of statically indeterminate structures by the force method, displacement method of analysis: slope-deflection equations, displacement method of analysis: moment distribution, analysis of beams and frames consisting of nonprismatic members, truss analysis using the stiffness method, beam analysis using the stiffness method, and plane frame analysis using the stiffness method. For individuals planning for a career as structural engineers.

Stop and Go, Yes and No - What Is an Antonym (Words Are Categorical)

Cleary describes and illustrates antonyms from the obvious stop and go, yes and no, front and back, fast and slow, to the more obscure: excite and soothe, hefty and diminutive. He elaborates on reasons for celebrating opposites and also describes how to create them through the use of powerful prefixes such as un,dis, im, and non.

The illustrations for some pairs must have been quite a challenge for Gable, for example, depicting absurd and somewhat normal in two cartoon drawings. The bouncy lettering style enhances the whimsical rhymes and makes for yet another strong addition to collections of books about the English language.

Sourcebook On Intellectual Property Law

This book provides a self-contained guide for every student of intellectual property law. It gives a comprehensive view of UK patent, copyright and design law, together with the law of confidentiality and passing off.

Topography rights, rights in performances and plant breeding rights are also dealt with. In each case, legislative initiatives from the European Community are discussed in detail. Much of our intellectual property law already comes from this source, and domestic legislation is increasingly harmonised among Member States. Where appropriate, comparisons are drawn with other jurisdictions.

Sourcebook on Contract Law 2nd edition

In this book, the authors have compiled a selection of materials on the law of contract consisting of case law, statutory material and academic commentary which will assist students in this subject at both degree level and higher non-degree level. It is hoped that the selection of materials and accompanying text will permit an appreciation of the key issues relevant to the study of this branch of the law.

Through academic commentary, as well as case law and statutory materials, students will be able to glean an understanding of the wider context in which the law of contract operates. The materials selected are also augmented by a brief analysis of the relevant issues in text form, thereby providing readers with the opportunity to engage in wide reading by reference to footnoted material.

New materials covered in this second edition include the provisions of the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 and its effect on the doctrine of privity of contract and the likely effect of the EC Directive on Consumer Guarantees and Related After Sales Service, adopted by the Council of Ministers in 1999. Further important legislative changes brought about through European Community activity include the provisions of the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999 which make important alterations to the means by which the Regulations may be enforced. As always, the courts continue to develop doctrine and principle, most significantly, since the last edition, in the area of remedies for breach of contract and undue influence.

Relating to Adolescents - Educators in a Teenage World

This book is part primer on adolescent psychology, part primer on adult psychology, and full primer on how adults who work with teenagers can deal with teenagers more effectively. I offer conceptual frameworks that I hope will encourage adults to talk to one another about their work with teens, especially the challenges.

I contend that we all face challenges because we all become affected by our teenage students, and therefore we should recognize, acknowledge, and talk about our challenges in an effort to apply best practices in our work.

Real-Life Math Everyday Use of Mathematical Concepts

"What does this have to do with real life?" is a question that plagues mathematics teachers across America, as students are confronted with abstract topics in their high school mathematics courses. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics emphasizes the importance of making real world connections in teaching mathematics so that learning new content is meaningful to students.

And in meeting NCTM national standards, this invaluable book provides many insights into the many connections between mathematics applications and the real world. Nearly 50 math concepts are presented with multiple examples of how each is applied in everyday environments, such as the workplace, nature, science, sports, and even parking.

From logarithms to matrices to complex numbers, concepts are discussed for a variety of mathematics courses, including:

Quirky, Jerky, Extra Perky - More About Adjectives

Brian P. Cleary's playful verse and Brian Gable's comical cats turn traditional grammar lessons on end. Each adjective is printed in color for easy identification. Read this book aloud and share the delight of the sense--and nonsense--of words.

Principles of company law

Company law is a growth area more so, probably, than any other area in law. It reaches out into other areas of law and, of course, new areas of law are always emerging, for example auditors negligence, investment law and the FSA and administration orders.

The book gives a full analysis of the following areas: the company and other business organisations; types of company; setting up the company; managing the company; reconstituting the company; and supervision of company law.

The third edition takes into account several important changes in the law such as the social responsibilities of companies, the debate on the Cadbury, Greenbury and Hampel Committee Reports.

I liked the snappy style and the concise treatment of areas of company law that students usually find difficult. I would be happy to refer students to this text. -- David Crouch, College of Law.
