Narrow Syntax and Phonological Form Scrambling in the Germanic languages (Linguistics Today)

‘Scrambling’, the kind of word order variation found in West Germanic languages, has been commonly treated as a phenomenon completely unrelated to North Germanic ‘Object Shift’.

This book questions this view and defends a unified analysis on the basis of strictly syntactic and phonological evidence.

In Search of Universal Grammar From Old Norse to Zoque by Terje Lohndal (Linguistics Today)

This volume in honor of Jan Terje Faarlund covers the areas in which he has contributed to linguistic theorizing, ranging from in-depth studies of Norwegian and Scandinavian grammar both synchronically and diachronically, to work on the Indian language Chiapas Zoque.

The book is organized thematically with two chapters on each topic: The grammar of the Scandinavian languages (Tor A. Åfarli and Christer Platzack); language policies and sociolinguistics (Unn Røyneland and Peter Trudgill); French (Hans Petter Helland and Christine Meklenborg Salvesen); language change (Werner Abraham and Elly van Gelderen); lesser-studied languages (Alice Harris and Jerry Sadock); language acquisition (David Lightfoot and Marit Westergaard); and language evolution (Erika Hagelberg and Salikoko Mufwene).

This book will be of interest to a wide range of readers, from students to scholars working on any of the areas covered.

Focus Structure in Generative Grammar by Carsten Breul (Linguistics Today)

The notion of focus structure underlying the present work is essentially that of Lambrecht (1994), who distinguishes what he calls the predicate focus, argument focus and sentence focus types of focus structure.

He illustrates this distinction by the A-utterances in (1), where the word in small capitals is the carrier of the primary sentence accent (see Lambrecht 1994:223):
(1) a. predicate focus structure
Q:What happened to your car?
A: My car/It broke down.
b. argument focus structure
Q: I heard your motorcycle broke down?
A: My car broke down.
c. sentence focus structure
Q:What happened?
A: My car broke down.

Coreference Modality and Focus Studies on the Syntax Semantics Interface (Linguistics Today)

This volume is a collection of selected papers originally presented at the XVIth Colloquium on Generative Grammar that was held at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

All the papers deal with current issues within the generative framework, mostly paying attention to phenomena pertaining to the syntax-semantics interface.

Shakespeare and Carnival After Bakhtin (Early Modern Literature in History)

This collection of essays reassesses a range of Shakespeare's plays in relation to carnivalesque theory. The plays discussed include: "Henry IV"; "Romeo and Juliet"; "A Midsummer Night's Dream"; "The Merry Wives of Windsor"; "Hamlet"; "Measure For Measure"; "The Winter's Tale"; and "Henry VIII".

Contributors re-historicize the carnivalesque in different ways, offering both a developed application, or critique of, Bakhtin's thought.

Linguistics for L2 Teachers by Larry Andrews

Linguistics for L2 Teachers is designed to help bilingual and ESL teachers better understand how and why the English language works, and to broaden their abilities to help their students learn about the various functions of English in the real world.

It is not a complete curriculum in English linguistics, but rather, a foundation from which teachers can continue to grow and to teach with greater confidence. The reader-friendly, conversational style makes the concepts easily accessible to preservice and in-service teachers who have little or no previous experience in language study.

This textbook:
* explains various aspects of English using non-technical terminology;
* goes beyond the study of grammar to examine the functions of language, not just its form;
* presents language applications in L2 classrooms; and
* clearly delineates the significance of chapter topics for L2 teachers and students.

Each chapter includes prereading activities to enhance the reader's comprehension; postreading activities to expand and elaborate the concepts; and interactive "Be A Linguist" activities to help readers think in ways similar to the ways linguists think and to provide opportunities to apply ideas explained within the chapter.

Intended for all teachers of students for whom English is a new language, this text will help them be better prepared to meet the important challenges and questions they encounter in their classrooms.

Landmarks In Linguistic Thought III The Arabic Linguistic Tradition (Routledge History of Linguistic Thought Series)

Landmarks in Linguistic Thought: The Arabic Linguistic Tradition introduces the major issues and themes that have determined the development of the Arabic linguistic tradition.

Each chapter contains a short extract from a translated "landmark" text followed by a commentary which places the text in its social and intellectual context.

The chosen texts frequently offer scope for comparison with the Western tradition. By contrasting the two systems, the Western and the Arabic, this book serves to highlight the characteristics of two very different systems and thus will stimulate new ideas about the history of linguistics. This book presumes no prior knowledge of Arab-Islamic culture or Arabic language.

Figures of Speech Sixty Ways to Turn a Phrase by Arthur Quinn

Writing is not like chemical engineering. The figures of speech should not be learned the same way as the periodic table of elements. This is because figures of speech are not about hypothetical structures in things, but about real potentialities within language and within ourselves.

The "figurings" of speech reveal the apparently limitless plasticity of language itself. We are inescapably confronted with the intoxicating possibility that we can make language do for us almost anything we want. Or at least a Shakespeare can. The figures of speech help to see how he does it, and how we might.

Therefore, in the chapters presented in this volume, the quotations from Shakespeare, the Bible, and other sources are not presented to exemplify the definitions. Rather, the definitions are presented to lead to the quotations. And the quotations are there to show us how to do with language what we have not done before. They are there for imitation.

BARRONS Painless Spelling (Painless Series)

The author points out ways in which recognizing sound and letter patterns makes spelling easier. Also important are recognition of diphthongs, silent letters, compound and abbreviated words, contractions, homophones, homographs, prefixes, suffixes, and base words. “Brain tickler” problems challenge students’ imaginations and test their learning progress.

Barron’s popular Painless Series of study guides for middle school and high school students offer a lighthearted, often humorous approach to their subjects, transforming details that might once have seemed boring or difficult into a series of interesting and mentally challenging ideas. Most titles in the series feature many fun-to-solve “Brain Tickler” problems with answers at the end of each chapter.

BARRONS Painless Science Projects (Painless Series)

This book was written for kids who find science courses--and especially, science projects--daunting. Author Faith Hickman Brynie promises that she will show them "how to carry out a project that's as much fun as a day at the beach."

Her opening chapter tells how to ask good science questions and shape them into promising plans for a project. Chapter 2 offers guidance in transforming an idea into a logical design that's safe, practical, and affordable. Succeeding chapters instruct on collecting and organizing data, writing a report or giving an oral presentation, building a display, and improving a project as it evolves.

She also provides helpful checklists on topics ranging from safety to seeking expert help. Kids learn to enjoy doing original science projects, rather than merely repeating experiments taken from books. Middle school and high school students who think they hate science will change their minds in a hurry when they use this book.

BARRONS Painless Junior - Science

Elementary school students who find science mystifying, daunting, and hard to understand will change their minds when they open this book.

The authors have transformed fundamental scientific principles into an exciting adventure where they discover how plant and animal life interact within the Earth's ecosystem, how energy is converted into heat and motion, how matter exists in solid, liquid, and gaseous states.

How light is reflected and refracted, how magnetism and electricity are related, how the Earth revolves around the Sun, how the Moon revolves around the Earth, how different kinds of rock were formed, and how the Earth's surface has been formed and shaped over a period of many billions of years.

The student-friendly text is complemented with instructive line art.

African American Literature and the Classicist Tradition Black Women Writers from Wheatley to Morrison

“Not many scholars have the opportunity to trail blaze and publish a seminal work; Walters has a just that, and will make a major impact on scholarship in Classics, Black Studies, and Comparative Literature.

Walters’ work fosters discussion on how black women have used the classics – as empowering, complicated, subtle; how black women signify off of one another; and generally how a handful of extremely important writers from a local or specific context found universal appeal.

Walters moves from Phillis Wheatley to Rita Dove, while also discussing authors such as Gwendolyn Brooks and Toni Morrison. This is a wonderful array of significant authors.”--Patrice Rankine, Purdue University
