BBC Radio Drama - The Importance of Being Earnest Oscar Wilde

Two amorous young gentlemen, objects of their affection who are in love with the name Ernest, the worlds most formidable aunt, a dotty governess, and a dull-witted country parson--these are perhaps the most feckless, unconsciously witty, and uproarious characters ever to grace a stage.

A tour de force of wit and irony, Oscar Wilde's most enduring and influential play enjoys frequent, if not always expert, revival.

BBC Radio Drama - Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens

When Arthur Clennam returns to England after many years abroad, he takes a kindly interest in Amy Dorrit, his mother’s seamstress, and in the affairs of Amy’s father, William Dorrit, a man of shabby grandeur, long imprisoned for debt in the Marshalsea.

As Arthur soon discovers, the dark shadow of the prison stretches far beyond its walls to affect the lives of many, from the kindly Mr. Pancks, the reluctant rent-collector of Bleeding Heart Yard, and the tipsily garrulous Flora Finching, to Merdle, an unscrupulous financier, and the bureaucratic Barnacles in the Circumlocution Office. A masterly evocation of the state and psychology of imprisonment, Little Dorrit is one of the supreme works of Dickens’s maturity.

An Inspector Calls, first produced in 1946 when society was undergoing sweeping transformations, has recently enjoyed an enormously successful revival. While holding its audience with the gripping tension of a detective thriller, it is also a philosophical play about social conscience and the crumbling of middle class values.

Duration: 90 minutes

An Inspector Calls was first performed in 1945 in two Moscow theatres, as an appropriate venue in England could not be found. (Critics have speculated that the play's themes were considered too negative and critical for wartime British audiences). The play had its first English production in 1946 at the New Theatre in London with Alec Guinness as Eric Birling

BBC Radio Drama - All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque

This book is so moving and yet, despite the horrors endured on the frontline during WW1, a sense of humour (however grim) is retained throughout, almost to the last few paragraphs. The story is written in the first person narrative, by a young German soldier, Paul Bauer.

He is only eighteen when he is pressured by his family, friends and society in general, to enlist and fight at the front. He enters the army, along with 6 other lads he was at school with, each one filled with fresh, lively, optimistic and patriotic thoughts, but within a few months they are all as old men, in mind if not completely in body.

Paul and his friends witness such horrors and endure such severe hardship and suffering, that they are unable to even speak about it to anyone but each other. This is a very moving and poignant novel, and the reader is made even more aware of its poignancy in knowing that its author is writing from experience, having suffered greatly as a young man on the frontline, whilst fighting for the Fatherland

BBC Radio Collection - The Odyssey

This is a BBC Radio 4 full-cast production of Homer's epic seafaring adventure, dramatised by award-winning poet Simon Armitage, and starring Tim McInnerny and Amanda Redman 'My fame is written in the heavens, and my fate too...' So speaks Odysseus as he starts to recount his struggles to sail home to Ithaca, in one of the greatest pieces of storytelling in Western literature.

"The Odyssey" is his incredible traveller's tale - and also the story of his faithful wife, Penelope who waits for him, besieged by suitors, and their son, Telemachus who has a quest of his own. In a twenty-year journey, fabulous fantasy mixes with extraordinary reality as Odysseus encounters enchantresses, nymphs, monsters, prophets and ghosts. From the temptations of the lotus flowers and the Sirens' song to the horrors of the Cyclops' cave and the Land of the Dead, the story of his encounters is riveting. We hear of Circe, who turned his men into swine; Calypso, who held Odysseus prisoner for seven years; and the dreadful six-headed monster Scylla who devoured some of his crew. And we hear of the Gods, who have a vital role to play...

Dramatised by major contemporary poet Simon Armitage to celebrate the return of the Olympics to Athens, this full-cast production brings Odysseus's adventures to vivid life, conveying all the excitement, suspense and poetry of the original. A stunning aural rollercoaster ride, "The Odyssey" will have your heart in your mouth and stir your soul.

Styles is not a happy household and in the blistering summer heat, tensions mount. Even so, the tragic murder, which occurs is not expected.

Thus begins one of the great partnerships and friendships in the history of crime. John Moffatt stars as Hercule Poirot, Simon Williams as Captain Hastings and Philip Jackson as Detective Inspector Japp, who already has reason to be indebted to the distinguished and unique hero of so many mysteries.
