Word Power Vocabulary Enrichment Activities Grades 5-6

This book is one of a series of five vocabulary enrichment texts created to add word power by expanding the working vocabularies of young readers and writers. Each book contains 22 new word activities and three, two-page review lessons.

Each activity presents three new, challenging, and useful words for students at the designated grade. The content is of value to a wide range of students providing flexibility for use in grades above or below those for which each book was primarily intended.

This series is unique in its approach to vocabulary selection. Teacher-authors use grade-appropriate children’s literature (see book lists in Teaching Guide) as sources for the basic word pool. The words recognized as above-level by ordinary readability standards provide a core of potentially useful words for vocabulary enrichment.

Lessons combine the core words with related words—often a synonym and
an antonym—to create a reasonable and practical learning environment. Words are then introduced in mini-stories for motivation, context clues, and maximum reinforcement of meaning.

Word Power Phrasal Verbs and Compounds A Cognitive Approach

This is a textbook for guided self-learning, intended for post-intermediate and advanced learners of English. It contains some 1100 phrasal compounds used with 17 particles/prepositions which combine with some 500 different verbs, nouns and adjectives.

Numerous glosses allow the teacher to use it in very heterogeneous classes. Thanks to cognitive linguistics, the material is organized around each particle, giving the students an insight into the networks of metaphorical meanings of each particle. Furthermore, the book implements the most important findings and techniques in the field of learning a foreign language.

Word Power An Anthology of Articles and Tests

"The Editors of Reader's Digest Word Power: An Anthology Of Articles & Tests with an Introduction by Peter Funk" is a Berkley/Reader's Digest book. A classical book of vocabulary written by world  leading writers of Reader's Digest.

Unsolved Mysteries Reading and Discussion for Intermediate-Level Students (Teachers Edition)

Unsolved Mysteries is divided into ten lessons, each with the following format:
— The mystery
— A comprehension check on the reading in the form of true/false statements, multiple-choice questions and open-ended sentences.
— Language practice. This consists of a vocabulary and phrasal verb exercise which provides contextualisation and practice of some of the words and  phrasal verbs in the reading, and a grammar point used in the reading, with a brief explanation of that point as well as an exercise based on it.
— Discussion. This is a discussion of the mystery, with an opportunity to solve it.
— Writing. This final section of the lesson allows you to express your own thoughts about the mystery. You may be asked to write a letter about it or to
be a reporter writing an article for your newspaper, and so on.

As part of the language practice has to do with phrasal verbs it might be a good idea to refresh your memory as to what a phrasal verb is and how it is used: actually a phrasal verb is a ‘miniature idiom’ of two, sometimes three, words: a verb plus one or more prepositions. Like idioms, the words in a phrasal verb mean something quite different when taken together than they do individually.

The words look up, when taken individually, simply mean  raise your eyes upwards. As a phrasal verb, however, these two words mean something quite different:  find information in a reference book or  visit unexpectedly. There is often very little relationship between the meaning of the individual words and their combination in a  phrasal verb.

Finally, a word about the mysteries themselves. The readings here are brief and give only the information necessary for the class to have an interesting discussion. If you would like to know more about any of them, lots of books and articles have been published on all the subjects included here. There are also hundreds of other unsolved mysteries that you might want to read about, too and try to solve!

Teaching Modern Languages (The Open University Postgraduate Certificate of Education Series)

Modern language classrooms are currently dominated by the communicative method of language teaching. This reader draws together recent and newly commissioned papers to show the origins of communicative methodology, how it has developed, what its research justification is and how it can most effectively be used in the classroom.

Various chapters examine the particular challenges of differentiation, teaching grammar, encouraging pupils to use the target language together and teaching a foreign language to children with special educational needs. The final section discusses ways of developing creativity in the modern languages classroom through the use of drama, creative writing and role play. Anyone involved in teaching modern languages will find this reader a rich source for reflection and good practice.

Listening to Spoken English 2nd Edition by Gillian Brown - Pearson Education

The main topic of this revised and updated edition is the comprehension of the spoken language. Subjects covered include the function of intonation and paralinguistic features, while revisions made include a new section on `pause' and how this interacts with rhythm.

For those who are familiar with the first edition, it will be convenient to have some indication of where the main changes lie.

Chapter one has been largely rewritten to give an outline of current approaches to a model of comprehension of spoken language.

Chapter two has a new initial section but otherwise remains as it was.

Chapter three incorporates a new section on "pause" and how this interacts with rhythm, and rather more on the function of stress.

Chapter four has an extended initial section but otherwise remains largely as it was.

Chapter five on intonation contains several sections which have been rewritten to varying extents.

Chapter six of the first edition has disappeared: in 1977, very little work had been published on "fillers" and it seemed worthwhile incorporating a chapter that sat rather oddly with the phonetic/phonological interests of the rest of the book.

Not that there is a great industry of descriptions of the forms and functions of these and similar phenomena there seems no reason to retain this early but admittedly primitive account. The chapter on "paralinguistic vocal features", now chapter six, has some rewriting in the early part but considerable rewriting in the last sections.

The final chapter on "teaching listening comprehension" has grown greatly in length. It still incorporates some material from the original chapter but most of it is completely rewritten.
