Motivating Learners in the Classroom - Ideas and Strategies

The key message of this book is that motivation is crucial for effective learning and this develops from an understanding of the learning process. That process relates to the complete learning experience – the learner’s preferences, the expectations placed on the learner, the task, the teaching process, learning strategies, the resources and the learning environment.

The role of management and school ethos are also considered in this book as school systems can have implications for motivation and effective learning. This book is about learning and principally about helping teachers to help learners build a solid foundation for learning – a foundation that will assist in the development of motivation and effective learning and promote learner independence.

The book is not a ‘pick and mix’ collection of ideas on learning, but is about planning for learning, developing the foundations for learning and learner autonomy. The book lays the foundations for lifelong learning. The foundations of learning, the learning plans, the emotional and cognitive factors and how learning is presented and assessed, as well as the fundamental issue of motivation, are all crucial elements of this book.

More Readers Theatre for Beginning Readers

After more than a decade in print, Readers Theatre for Beginning Readers continues to outsell all comparable books on Readers Theatre. More RTBR capitalizes on both the popularity of Readers Theatre for Beginning Readers and the emphasis on fluency due to the recommendations of the National Reading Panel.

Further, the fact that many classrooms now have ESL students or struggling readers provides a demand for more easy scripts. The introduction includes a brief overview of how to get started with Readers Theatre, with particular attention to the needs of young students.

Thirty new scripts are organized into 3 sections with ten scripts each for grades one, two, and three as analyzed by the Flesch Kincaid readability formula. As with RTBR, each script includes suggestions for props, presentation, and the like. For the first section, more choral and/or group responses is included with particular emphasis on rhyme and repetition. Grades K-2.

Children Reading Comprehension and Assessment

Originating in a recent CIERA conference held at the University of Michigan, this book brings together the nation's most distinguished researchers to examine how readers understand text and how comprehension is assessed.

The second part examines how vocabulary, motivation, and expertise influence comprehension, and it includes analyses of the developmental course and correlates of comprehension. Chapters in the third part consider how schools focus on comprehension for instruction and assessment.

The fourth part includes chapters on large-scale assessment that analyze how test formats and psychometric characteristics influence measures of reading comprehension. At the end of each part is a commentary--written by an expert--that reviews the chapters, critiques the main points, and synthesizes critical issues.
