Teaching Reading to Adult English Language Learners

Teaching Reading to Adult English Language Learners: A Reading Instruction Staff Development Program was developed with a federal English Literacy and Civics Education grant from the Office of Adult Education and Literacy of the Virginia Department of Education.

The purpose of this project was to develop and field-test a series of staff development workshops to support instructors of adult English language learners in constructing an understanding of the foundations of reading in a second language and appropriate reading instruction for adult second language learners.

Such an understanding is necessary to implement adult ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) content standards and to prepare learners for reading assessments. A companion project for reading instructors of adult native English speakers, Introduction to Research-Based Adult Reading Instruction, was completed in 2004.

International Handbook of Research on Teachers and Teaching Vol 21

The International Handbook of Research on Teachers and Teaching provides a fresh look at the ever changing nature of the teaching profession throughout the world. This collection of over 70 original articles addresses a wide range of issues that are relevant for understanding the present educational climate in which the accountability of teachers and the standardized testing of students have become dominant.

The international collection of authors brings to the handbook a breadth of knowledge and experience about the teaching profession, and a wealth of material across a number of comparative dimensions, such as between developed and developing countries, and Eastern and Western cultures. In addition, many articles address the emerging challenges to education and to the lives of teachers which are brought about by the globalization trends of the 21st Century.

The handbook is divided into two volumes, and focuses on the following general topic areas:
Theory and Research on TeachersBecoming a TeacherCharacteristics of TeachersTeacher BehaviorsTeacher Life Cycle

Theories of Teaching and LearningTeaching in ClassroomsTeaching Specific Student PopulationsThe Teaching of Individual SubjectsGreat Debates about Teachers and Teaching

The handbook is written for students and researchers in the fields of education, the social sciences and the behavioral sciences. In addition, it is a valuable resource for policy-makers who want knowledge and insights based on the latest research findings. Many author recommendations are relevant for the development of educational reform policies in both developed and developing societies.

International Handbook of English Language Teaching Series: Springer International Handbooks of Education

This two volume Handbook provides a comprehensive examination of policy, practice, research and theory related to English Language Teaching in international contexts. More than 70 chapters highlight the research foundation for best practices, frameworks for policy decisions, and areas of consensus and controversy in second language acquisition and pedagogy.

The Handbook provides a unique resource for policy makers, educational administrators, and researchers concerned with meeting the increasing demand for effective English language teaching.

The spread of English as a global language is well documented. In countries around the world, English has replaced other languages as the second language taught most frequently and intensively in school. These trends are escalating and have not yet reached their peak.

For example, in Japan, pilot projects have been instituted to start teaching English in the primary grades and similar proposals are either being discussed or have been implemented in other countries around the world. Also, bilingual and trilingual programs involving English have increased significantly both in private sector and public sector schools. In short, parental pressure in many contexts has resulted in English language teaching (ELT) being introduced earlier in children’s school careers and often being used as a medium of instruction. Increasing demand for English language teaching is also evident among adult learners. Large-scale ELT programs for adult learners have been established in the community and workplace as a result of the globalization of the workforce, concerns to increase economic competitiveness, and a move towards life-long learning.

Increased focus on English language teaching has also occurred in countries where English is the dominant language. Many English-speaking countries have experienced dramatic increases in immigration during the past 30 years.

Written for: English language teachers (pre-service and postgraduate), researchers, teacher educators in ELT, administrators, graduate students in applied linguistics and education; policy makers.

Improve your English through Reading Stories Dancing Barefoot by Zoe Chant

Reading books can be a great way to pick up new vocabulary, see grammar in action and develop your understanding of a language. The key to success is choosing the right book for you.

Advantages of Reading
When you learn a language, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very helpful. There are many advantages associated with reading, including:

Learning Vocabulary In Context
You will usually encounter new words when you read. If there are too many new words for you, then the level is too high and you should read something simpler. But if there are, say, a maximum of five new words per page, you will learn this vocabulary easily. You may not even need to use a dictionary because you can guess the meaning from the rest of the text (from the context). Not only do you learn new words, but you see them being used naturally.

An Introduction to English Phonology by April McMahon

where you need improvement. 1001 Vocabulary and Spelling Questions is designed for many audiences.

It is for anyone who has ever taken a language arts course and needs to refresh forgotten skills. It can be used to supplement current class instruction. It can be used to boost job performance by improving your business writing abilities.

Most often, this book is used by people who are studying for important academic, entrance, or certification exams. Every test from the SAT exam to the Police Sergeant test requires an excellent grasp of vocabulary skills.
