5 Steps to A 5 AP US History

An exciting new series of study guides that lets each student design a course of study pitched to his or her individual needs and learning style

Each year, more than one million U.S. high school students take one or more advanced placement (AP) exams, and, according to official projections, that number will continue to rise in the years ahead.

That is because AP exams confer important benefits on those who do well on them. High AP scores are indispensable to gaining admission to most elite colleges. They provide students with a competitive edge when competing for grants and scholarships. And they allow students to bypass required university survey courses, saving on skyrocketing tuition fees.

Designed to coincide perfectly with the most current

AP exams, Five Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations guides contain several advanced features that set them above all competitors. Each guide is structured around an ingenious Five-Step Plan. The first step is to develop a study plan, the second builds knowledge, the third and fourth hone test-taking skills and strategies, and the fifth fosters the confidence students need to ace the tests. This flexible study tool is also tailored to three types of students.

For the more structured student there is a "Month-by-Month" approach that follows the school year and a "Calendar Countdown" approach that begins with the new year. For students who leave studying to the last minute "Basic Training" covers the basics in just four weeks.

Other outstanding features include:
* Sample tests that closely simulate real exams
* Review material based on the contents of the most recent tests
* Icons highlighting important facts, vocabulary, and frequently-asked questions
* Boxed quotes offering advice from students who have aced the exams and from AP teachers and college professors
* Websites and links to valuable online test resources, along with author e-mail addresses for students with follow-up questions
* Authors who are either AP course instructors or exam developers

Thesis Dissertation - The Performance of English Advanced Learner in Mastering Adjective Clauses

An adjective clause is a dependent clause that functions as an adjective which modifies a noun. The aspects of omission and punctuation in the adjective clause have usually caused ambiguities to advanced English learners.

The aspect of omission consists of two elements that is the omission of relative pronouns with 'be' and the omission of relative pronouns. The aspect of punctuation also consists of two aspects that is adjective clauses with commas and those without.

The objective of this study is to find out in which aspects with their elements of adjective clauses the English Department students have the difficulties; omission, the use of comma in adjective clause, or both of them. The method used in this research was a descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected by using a set of tests.

The sample of this research was 20 English Department Students of Syiah Kuala University who have passed Structure IV at least with a B grade. The research results show that the English Department students have difficulty in mastering both elements in the omission aspect and an element which is the adjective clause with comma in the aspect of punctuation. Based on the research results, the writer recommends that the students do more practices on the adjective clause.

I believe that this thesis will be a good reference for Undergraduate and Master's Degree Thesis and Dissertation.

Teachers Wanted Attracting and Retaining Good Teachers by Daniel A Heller

The public school system in the United States faces a perpetual challenge in attracting and retaining well-qualified teachers. In Teachers Wanted: Attracting and Retaining Good Teachers, Daniel A. Heller provides an insider's view of the sources of this ongoing problem--and powerful suggestions for resolving it.

Drawing on national research as well as his own 30 years of experience as a teacher, a principal and an administrator, Heller argues for a new concept of public education, beginning with the nature of teacher training. He advocates partnerships between public schools and higher education to provide a real-world view of the profession to young teacher interns. Within the schools, Heller espouses active gatekeeping by teachers and administrators, effective mentoring between teachers, community induction programs, ongoing inservice training, and high performance standards.

At the heart of many of these changes stands the principal. From upholding the mission of the school, to interviewing and hiring teachers, to empowering staff to make decisions affecting their own work, to creating an atmosphere in the school that fosters professional development, the principal plays a key role in breathing new life into the teaching profession.

We can revitalize teaching--if we are willing to embrace new roles and responsibilities across the educational community. Teachers Wanted offers practical insights into the changes that are essential to building a dynamic, intellectually challenging school environment that will attract and keep the most highly qualified teachers.

Practical Approaches to Using Learning Styles in Higher Education by Rita Dunn and Shirley A Grims

In the current climate, students all too often are the losers . . . in glossy brochures they’re assured that teaching is important, that a spirit of community pervades the campus, and that general education is the core of the undergraduate experience.

But the reality is that on far too many campuses, teaching is not well rewarded and faculty who spend too much time counseling and advising students may diminish their prospects for tenure and promotion.

Motivation For Achievement Possibilities for Teaching and Learning by M Kay Alderman 2nd Edition

The purpose of this edition is the same as the first edition: to present content from the current knowledge base in motivation that offers hope and possibilities for educators—teachers, parents, coaches, and administrators—to enhance motivation for achievement.

The knowledge base from research and theory was chosen to help teachers understand motivation of students and themselves and to provide the basis for strategies to foster motivation for all levels of student performance—from those deemed academically at-risk to those designated as honor students.

The content is based on two roles teachers have for supporting and cultivating motivation in the classroom: (a) establishing the classroom structure and instruction that provides the environment for optimal motivation, engagement, and learning; and (b) helping students develop the tools that will enable them to be self-regulated learners.

Modern Languages and Learning Strategies In Theory and Practice by Michael Grenfell and Vee Harris

Why a book on learner strategies?

Modern languages teaching over the past decade or so has moved from more or less traditional approaches, involving the explicit teaching of grammar and translation, to various versions of communicative methodology.

In England, the communicative accent has been reflected in the Graded Objectives movement, the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) and the reform of Advanced Level syllabuses. However, despite this trend and the appearance of aplethora of attractive and authentic language-teaching materials, there has been a growing concern that learners have not progressed as much as might have been anticipated.

Furthermore, learners are not developing independent language use; in short, they lack linguistic autonomy.

Milton Model Zebu Cards 2007

Each card in a deck has a language pattern written at the top and bottom, and a commentary in the center.  An underlined blank in a language pattern indicates a place for an embedded command.

The words in italics in the commentaries on the cards are examples of embedded commands.  The underlined words in the commentaries are just underlined for emphasis.

Zebu is a tool that you can use to practice and learn important language patterns, and have fun doing it!  Before you begin playing Zebu, have all the players agree not to take any of the suggestions made during the game seriously.  Then you are free to practice making hypnotic and trance inducing suggestions to the other players without the fear of anyone falling asleep.  Of course that makes it fair game to offer mischievous suggestions as well!

Inspiring Active Learning a Complete Handbook for Todays Teachers 2nd Edition

This book brings good news to teachers. No longer need teaching be so stressful. No longer need we struggle with our unmotivated students and passive learners.

No longer must we abandon so many of our ideals. We now know how we can run our classrooms so students will want to cooperate, will want to do good work, will in fact want to do the very best they can for us.

Idiomactive English

The objective of this book is to lead students of English to free, conversational use of idiomatic expressions. The frequency of idioms in everyday situations can make nonnative students feel at a loss.

Their knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary may not help in understanding the meaning of an idiom, and definitions and translations may lead to inaccuracies and more confusion. This book is designed to bring students into direct contact with idioms through illustrations.

Enhancing Learning Through Technology Research on Emerging Technologies and Pedagogies

This book is a collection of research work done in different parts of the worldwith one common goal – to enhance teaching and learning through technology. Content interaction and learning support are some of the key issues in the book.

Many of the contributors worked together, so to speak, in cyber space as a result of technological advances. Many got to know one another through conferences we attended since the late 90’s. Many of the ideas in the book were presented at ICT2006 and ICT2007.

The conference attracted about 300 researchers and practitioners around the world annually. One of the authors of Chapter One was indeed a keynote speaker from the conference.

Yet the current educational establishment is not up to these challenge; students work in isolation on repetitive assignments, in classes and schedules fi xed in place and time. Technologic and scientific innovations promise to dramatically enhance exiting learning methods.
