Now You are Talking! Task-based Activity Book

This book helps students to develop necessary "real-life" functional skills by promoting communication and interaction in the classroom through: i) developing oral skills; ii) effectively taking on (and using) new language; and iii) reviewing what has already been learned.Every "speaking" situation in life is a communication problem, in which "meaning" needs to be transferred and information or opinions must be communicated. "Now You're Talking!" helps students to experience and solve these problems using authentic materials in real-life settings, evaluating their success by the level of communication achieved.

Each Chapter of "Now You're Talking" takes a situation in which communication occurs in real-life, and presents a number of activities which use that situation. Some activities are designed around lexis (vocabulary), some around fluency, some suggest relevant language, and others just look at the situation itself, with no linguistic emphasis. The text speaks directly to the students, and uses language appropriate to their level, reflecting an "interactive", student-centered approach. Instructions (e.g. on how to perform an activity) are tasks in themselves (comprehension tests), and indicate learning levels and needs. Students who perform tasks without asking for help will not only demonstrate comprehension, but also enable the teacher to assist others who need immediate help and counseling.

Media Literacy in Schools - Practice, Production and Progression

A range of case studies are presented which show how digital media work can be produced in schools, drawing on children's own cultural knowledge. It also shows the benefits of such projects in terms of learning outcomes and increased self-esteem for a range of learners. The book comes with a CD-Rom of children's work from the various case study projects, exhibiting the high standard of film clips and animations that can be produced with the help of this text.

With an integrated approach drawing together practice, theory and research, the book will help teachers to plan for and develop their own media projects in school. It offers advice on integrating media work across the curriculum (in English and media classes as well as in ICT and citizenship), and presents a model of progression which shows how learning can develop from the first years of secondary school through to GCSE level. In line with current government initiatives to open up curriculum boundaries, the book shows how to plan for longer periods of time for these projects.

Educational Psychology - Cognition and Learning, Individual Differences and Motivation

The field of educational psychology is primarily concerned with teaching and learning. Educational psychology has a long historical past and an extensive record of conducting empirical research into the teaching/learning process.

Educational psychology has also been involved with the topics of motivation, intelligence, memory, cognition, intellectual development and evaluation and assessment. Over the past 50 years, educational psychology has been predominantly involved with the learning processes of the 'normal, average' student.

However, over the past 20 years, mainstreaming and later inclusion has presented an additional challenge for educational psychologists and classroom teachers. This book presents leading research on cognition and learning, individual differences and motivation.
