Resource Books for Teachers - Exam Classes

Exam Classes is much more than an exam practice book. It contains advice and activities to help teachers prepare students effectively for examinations, including exam strategies, awareness raising, understanding test rubrics, and practice at exam-type questions.

The 90 activities help prepare students for a wide variety of public English language examinations, including most of the main American and British exams. There are sections on all four skills, plus 'Grammar' and a chapter on 'Exam strategies'.

An exam task-type index helps teachers select activities appropriate for their particular classes. There is also an Appendix listing the main English language examinations set by British, US, and European boards.

Resource Books for Teachers - Drama with Children

In this new book, Sarah Phillips comprehensively addresses these two needs. She offers carefully structured activities with clearly articulated educational and language teaching aims. And the book brings together a collection of ideas, texts, and activities which the busy teacher of young children can draw upon to suit the needs of her own class.

It begins with dramatization activities, such as mime, and goes on to the use of songs, rhymes, and chants, the making and use of puppets, and the use of playscripts. It culminates with slightly more advanced role play and simulation activities.

As the demand for English for younger learners continues to grow, so too does the demand for reliable and stimulating teaching materials.This collection represents a significant addition to the resources available to teachers at this level, and is a fitting extension of the work available in Sarah Phillips’ earlier book in this series, Young Learners, which has already proved such a well-tried favourite.

Resource Books for Teachers - Drama and Improvisation

There is much more in this book than is usually covered by the word ‘drama’. There are activities whose main purpose is to energize a class, to make the students feel positive and ready to work.

Other activities are designed to encourage student creativity, sometimes simple, sometimes complex, but always exciting for the student, There is also material for use with an extra-curricular English drama club and eight original sketches.

How do these activities help the teacher?

I’m sure that teachers who enjoy using drama activities in class and regularly use them will find a lot of interesting new material in this book. However, I’m also interested in providing manageable material for teachers who have less experience of using such activi ties or who think that they do not have time for them. Most teachers have very little time to do anything in the class apart from following the coursebook and preparing for exams or tests. Following the dictates of a coursebook and the requirements of an exam often mean that teachers become lecturers and providers of information, which can mean that students spend a lot of time only passively involved with the lesson.

This situation can be improved by an activity that inspires students in a way that ‘normar class activities do not. This book is full of such activities. Most of the activities in this book are quick to set up, fun to do, and do not take up much of the lesson. They will wake the students up and make them ready for the next compulsory and possibly passive part of the lesson.

Resource Books for Teachers - Dictionaries

Dictionaries are a widely available and relatively cheap resource. This book contains a wealth of ideas for making more effective use of dictionaries, both as a reference tool and as a language learning resource.

It makes learners aware of the wealth of information in most ELT dictionaries, practises reading skills, provides memory training, and encourages learners to 'have fun with dictionaries'.

Resource Books for Teachers - Cultural Awareness

This extremely popular series gives teachers practical advice and guidance, together with resource ideas and materials for the classroom. The tasks and activities are clearly presented, and offer teachers all the information they need about appropriate level, time, preparation, materials, classroom management, monitoring, and follow-up activities.

Each title offers up to 100 ideas plus variations to encourage teachers to adapt the activities to suit their particular classes. The series is aimed at teachers of secondary and adult learners, and organizers of in-service training courses will find the series useful to demonstrate fresh ideas.

Key Features:
  + Gives teachers practical and specific guidance on how to help learners improve their cross-cultural communication skills.
  + Includes stimulating topic areas for language practice, such as cultural achievements, cultural artefacts, and culturally-influenced beliefs, perceptions, and behaviour.
  + Helps learners of English to understand English-speaking cultures, but also raises learners' awareness of their own and each others' cultures.

Resource Books for Teachers - Creative Poetry Writing

With few exceptions, the activities can be set up with no resources at all, apart from a blackboard, and paper for the students to write on. However, resources such as pictures, wall posters, and home-made recordings of poems will supplement the activities well if teachers have these facilities. Nor do the activities require special slots in the timetable designated ‘creative writing’.

They can be integrated into the coursebook and can support the language syllabus, whether it is functional, notional, situational, grammatical, humanistic, all of these or none of these. The activities draw on 20 years’ experience in language classrooms involving all levels, ages, backgrounds, and purposes. Some of the poems cited here are composite poems generated by a whole class, or by several groups over a number of years; their lines and ideas were recorded in notebooks, diaries, and lesson plans. These classes have been eclectic, to say the least.

They include primaiy language centres in Bedford in the early 1980s, Turkish Cypriot children in a Haringey primary school,Vietnamese asylum-seekers in Bedford, Malaysian B.Ed. students in Plymouth, Swiss adult language learners, Hungarian doctors in ESP classes, multicultural adult language groups, teacher and student groups in and from Belgium, Hungary, Poland, France, Sweden, Sri Lanka, India, China, Japan, and Mexico.

Resource Books for Teachers - Beginners

The second myth is the belief that ‘beginners’ are a single category. In his acute and helpful analysis, Peter Grundy shows just how many different groups of beginners there are, each requiring subtly different approaches.

A constant problem with older beginners is the discrepancy between their relatively high levels of affective and cognitive development, and their low level of linguistic competence in the target language. This book is notably successful in showing how activities requiring very limited language can none the less be made cognitively and affectively challenging.

In this way, beginning learners are enabled to bring their adult experiences to bear on the language they imperfectly command, without the loss of self-esteem and the sense of hopelessness which low-level materials all too often provoke.

There is a proper understanding of the very real and stubborn difficulties faced by beginners, especially when a new script is also involved. Chapter 5, ‘Roman script’, is a rare instance of a serious attempt to deal with this set of problems.

The book succeeds in being simultaneously innovative and realistic. It combines the best of communicative practice with the pragmatic realization that beginners cannot be expected to run before they have learnt to walk. In this it seems to me to have mastered ‘the art of doing ordinary things extraordinarily well’.In my view, this book makes a significant contribution to a hitherto neglected area of professional concern.

Resource Books for Teachers - Art and Crafts with Children

There was a time when teaching English to young children was conceived of as maitily a matter of involving them in songs and games. Songs and games of course remain important for young learners, but our ideas have evolved considerably in recent years.

We have come to realize that, for these kinds of learners, there is a need for more than just teaching the language-rather the language is just one element in a process of helping them to develop as 'whole persons': an educational rather than just a training process.

This book is one response to this need. The focus is on involving children simultaneously in activities promoting their personal development and in helping them to learn the language. Art and craft activities serve these twin aims in an ideal fashion. While making things, the children also make meaning. As they explore shapes, colours, textures, constructions, they are extending their experience and understanding of the world-and doing it through the medium of the foreign language.

We are fortunate that, in Andrew Wright, we have a unique blend of experience and expertise in art and in language teaching. For fifteen years Andrew was a teacher of art and design. He has been able to draw on this experience to inform his later work in language teaching. As an artist, he has a proper understanding of the educational value of art and craft in developing children's understanding and sensitivity. He is passionately concerned that we should not trivialize art and craft activities just because the learners are young! As a language teacher and author, he appreciates the need to structure activities and to provide a framework of encouragement and support.

The book is a treasure house of imaginative, involving, and above all, practical activities. It is an invaluable addition to the resources of anyone involved in teaching younger learners.

Resource Books for Teachers - Advanced Learners 1st Edition

The Resource Books for Teachers series aims to provide practising or trainee teachers with ideas to help extend and diversify their everyday classroom practice. The series was quickly recognized as a source of interesting, thoughtful, and useful ideas.

This year’s new title – Advanced Learners addresses the needs of very advanced learners who wish to improve their proficiency further. It defines the distinctive learning style of advanced learners and challenges them both by introducing new activities and by engaging them in familiar activities at a higher level of proficiency.

Interactions I - A Writing Process Book

Interactions consists of eight texts plus two instructor's manuals for in-college or college-bound nonnative English students. INTERACTIONS I is for high-beginning to low-intermediate students, while INTERACTIONS II is for low-intermediate to intermediate students.

Within each level, I and II, the books are carefully coordinated by theme, vocabulary, grammar structure, and, where possible, language functions. A chapter in one book corresponds to and reinforces material taught in the same chapter of the other three books at that level for a truly integrated, four-skills approach.

Each level, I and II, consists of four books plus an instructor's manual. In addition to A Writing Process Book, they include:

A Communicative Grammar I, II: Organized around grammatical topics, these books include notional/functional material where appropriate. They present all grammar in context and contain a wide variety of communicative activities.

A Reading Skills Book I, II: The selections in these books are written by the authors and carefully graded in level of difficulty and amount of vocabulary. They include many vocabulary-building exercises and emphasize reading strategies: for example, skimming, scanning, guessing meaning from context, understanding the structure and organization of a selection, increasing reading speed, and interpreting the author's point of view.

A Listening!Speaking Skills Book I, II: These books use lively, natural language from a variety of contexts—dialogues, interviews, lectures, and announcements. Listening strategics emphasized include summarizing main ideas, making inferences, and listening for stressed words, reductions, and intonation. A cassette tape program with instructor's key accompanies each text.

Instructor's Manual I, II: These manuals provide instructions and guidelines for use of the books separately or in any combination to form a program. For each of the core books, there is a separate section with teaching tips and other suggestions. The instructor's manuals also include sample tests.

World English A Study of Its Development - Bilingual Education and Bilingualism Series

This book integrates a historical and linguistic exploration of world English, documenting the emergence of the language as a contested site of linguistic encounters. It revises the understanding of English spread during the colonial period, emphasizing the agency of non-mother-tongue English speakers.

The book contends that English owes its existence as a world language in large part to the struggle against imperialism but not to imperialism alone. To explain English varieties, the book introduces a new linguistic model of second language acquisition by speech communities: macroacquisition.

Ten chapters focus on the following:
(1) "Images of World English: Writing English as an International Language";
(2) "The Representation of the Social in a Social Science: Methodology in Linguistics";
(3) "Ideological and Economic Crosscurrents of Empire";
(4) "The Contested Terrain of Colonial Language Policy";
(5) "Access Denied: Containing the Spread of English";
(6) "The Becoming of a World Language";
(7) "Macroacquisition: Bilingual Speech Communities and Language Change";
(8) "The Macroacquisition of English: New Representations in the Language";
(9) "(The) World (of) English: Englishes in Convergence"; and
(10) "Decentering English Applied Linguistics."
(Contains approximately 400 references.) (SM)

The Native Speaker: Myth and Reality (Bilingual Education and Bilingualism)

Linguists, applied linguists and language teachers all appeal to the native speaker as an important reference point. But what exactly (who exactly?) is the native speaker?

This book examines the native speaker from different points of view, arguing that the native speaker is both myth and reality.

Bilingualism and Language Pedagogy - Bilingual Education and Bilingualism Series

Bilingualism and Language Pedagogy brings an understanding of language as a social practice and bilingualism as the study of bidirectional transitioning to the examination of bilingual settings in the US, Europe, and the developing countries.

Focusing both on bilingual linguistic competence and educational politics and practice, the volume provides valuable practical proposals and models for developing sociocultural and linguistic competencies among bilingual practitioners and students.

Thematic Guide to Popular Nonfiction by Lynda G Adamson

Popular nonfiction is widely read and is increasingly important to the curriculum. Literature classes examine the literary characteristics of nonfiction writing, while social studies courses turn to popular nonfiction for information about social issues.

In addition, public library patrons are often interested in reading nonfiction about particular topics. This guide helps students, teachers, librarians, and general readers identify popular works of nonfiction related to particular themes.

The Thematic Guide to Popular Nonfiction provides alphabetically arranged extended entries on 50 themes, including:
Adolescent Females American Dream Commerce Environment Genocide Islamic Women Leadership Poverty Race Relations And many others. Each entry defines and discusses the theme and provides a critical analysis of three or four related works of nonfiction.

The entries list additional nonfiction for further reading, and the Thematic Guide to Popular Nonfiction closes with lists of additional themes and related works, along with a bibliography of major works on popular nonfiction. Among the 155 titles discussed are: Angela's Ashes Black Elk Speaks Cheaper by the Dozen The Day Lincoln Was Shot Fast Food Nation The Hidden Life of Dogs Manchild in the Promised Land The Perfect Storm Seabiscuit And many more. High school, public, and academic libraries will value this guide as an indispensable companion to popular nonfiction.
