More Picture Perfect Science Lessons Using Childrens Books to Guide Inquiry K-4

Teachers raved when NSTA Press published Picture-Perfect Science Lessons, 3-6. They loved its lively mix of kid-magnet books, Standards-based science content, and ready-to-teach lessons that incorporate the BSCS 5E learning cycle. So what could be more perfect?

More Picture-Perfect Science Lessons, K-4! This volume offers 15 new lessons that combine picture books and inquiry to develop students interest in science and reading. More Picture-Perfect Science Lessons, K-4, follows the same winning formula that made the first volume a bestseller. The lessons cover physical science, life science, and Earth and space science. They include reproducible student pages and assessments.

They feature embedded reading-comprehension strategies. And they make students yearn to learn from such engaging fiction and nonfiction books as Diary of a Worm; Sunshine on My Shoulders; How Tall, How Short, How Faraway; and Leo Cockroach, Toy Tester. The award-winning authors know from their own classroom experience how important it is for time-starved teachers to integrate science and reading in a natural way ... and how students with reading troubles can benefit from an extra nudge to get engaged in science texts.

Introduction to Academic Writing 2nd Edition - Alice Oshima

As an ESL teacher trainer, I have used this book in a course on how to teach ESL writing. My students read through the entire book and worked through all the exercises in several chapters. They found it very helpful and practical for getting the main idea of how to teach ESL writing, how to present and practice skills, how to organize instruction.

Like most ESL textbooks, there are topics included in this one which aren't my first choice (why do we often give ESL students cheery topics like capital punishment, euthanasia, etc?), but overall I think the authors have done an excellent job of demystifying the writing process, both for teachers and students. The text deals with the writing process, rhetorical modes, and grammar. Very balanced.

Literary Praxis - Pedagogy Education and Praxis Series Vol 5

Literary Praxis: A Conversational Inquiry into the Teaching of Literature explores the teaching of literature in secondary schools. It does this from the vantage point of educators in a range of settings around the world, as they engage in dialogue with one another in order to capture the nature of their professional commitment, the knowledge they bring to their work as literature teachers, and the challenges of their professional practice as they interact with their students.

The core of the book comprises accounts of their day-to-day teaching by Dutch and Australian educators. These teachers do more than capture the immediacy of the here-and-now of their classrooms; they attempt to understand those classrooms relationally, exploring the ways in which their professional practice is mediated by government policies, national literary traditions and existing traditions of curriculum and pedagogy.

Improving What You Write by Falk S Johnson

This book seeks to help you improve your writing quickly and thoroughly. As aids to quickness, it offers two special features:
1. It provides a series of pre-tests to reveal which parts of the book you may skip and which you should study. Thus you spend time only on the parts that you need to learn, not on those dealing with what you already know.

2. It provides, near the back of the book, the answers to all the tests contained in the book. You may check your own work quickly, without waiting for somebody else to grade and return your papers. Thus you may move through this book as rapidly as you wish.

As aids to thoroughness, the book offers three other features:
1. It presents, in four different ways, each point to be learned. First, in a pre-test, it asks questions about the point, thus arousing your interest. Second, it explains the point, giving you a general knowledge. Third, it illustrates the point, making your knowledge more precise. And finally, in a post-test, it again asks questions about the point, so that you may check your mastery of that point before moving on to the next section.

2. As a rule, the points to be learned are arranged so that your understanding of the earlier ones will help you to understand the later ones. Thus you are not expected to learn something until you have been prepared to learn it. If you study the book from beginning to end (skipping the portions that you already know), you should not become "lost" or "get beyond your depth."

3. Because you may immediately check your answers on most tests, your new knowledge will be quickly "reinforced" — an important aid, psychologists say, in learning.

With all these aids for quick and thorough learning, the book should enable you to bring about a real improvement in your writing.
