Developing a Networked School Community A Guide to Realising the Vision

This book examines the next phase of schooling - the development of networked school communities. Already, there are trailblazing schools that have moved from the traditional paper-based form toward becoming digital schools.

Many of these schools understand the new and rich learning and teaching opportunities which become possible when they 'dismantle their traditional school walls,' and use their networks to connect with their homes and the wider community. Developing a Networked School Community provides guidance for how a school can realize these potentially immense opportunities.

It proposes a model that enables various approaches to build on the current reality and to capitalize upon the growing digital capacity of the home and the largely unharnessed 'teaching' capacity of the parents. It encourages the creation of a strengthened home-school nexus that can build collaboration and markedly improve student attainment. Developing a Networked School Community is for anyone interested in improving the quality, relevance, and effectiveness of schools, including parents, students, politicians, and the wider community, as well as principals, teachers, and other educational professionals.

Culture and Customs of the United States Volume 1

American life and culture is truly unique in that it was born from many other cultures around the world. When immigrants migrated to the Land of Opportunity, they brought with them pieces of their own heritage: foods, religions, holidays, festivals, music, and art, just to name a few. Through time, these customs have developed into what we now know as American life.

Explore how even within the US, various cultures and customs differ from New England to the Midwest to the Pacific. This unique two-volume addition to the Culture and Customs of the World series gives high school students, both national and international, the chance to examine the United States from the outside in. The mosaic of American culture comes to life in this expansive yet detailed study of what makes the United States a complex blend of customs and traditions.

Art Lab for Little Kids - 52 Playful Projects for Preschoolers by Susan Schwake

Art Lab for Kids (Quarry Books, 2012), the Labs can be used as singular projects, or used to build up to a year of hands-on fine art experiences. Each Lab also features the work of a prominent artist for inspiration. The book begins with an introduction on materials and setting up a space for making art. The lessons that follow are open-ended to be explored over and over - with different results each time.

They are geared for children being taught or guided by adults and are successful on all levels of experience and age. They do not result in “cookie cutter” end products, but are a method of learning something new each time they are used.

This motivational book stands out as a unique reference for creating fine art with children through finding the student’s own voice, marks and style and with playful lessons that result in significant skill building. Gorgeous photography shows different results from different people using the same lesson, exemplifying the way the lesson brings out each artist’s personal style.

Art Lab for Little Kids is a fresh source of creative activities for families and community groups or will work as lesson plans for both experienced and new art teachers in home school, preschool, and kindergarten environments
