Mind Expanding - Teaching for Thinking and Creativity in Primary Education

There is growing interest in developing flexible thinking and learning skills in the primary classroom but there has been little agreement as to exactly what these skills are and how best to teach for them.

This innovative book responds to that challenge with a coherent account of what thinking and creativity are and how they can be taught. Taking a 'dialogic' approach, it shows how engaging children in real dialogue is possible in every area of the curriculum and how this can lead to more reflective, considerate and creative children who are able to think for themselves and to learn creatively.

This book is important reading for all primary teachers and trainees who are looking for practical ideas for teaching thinking. It will also be valuable for anyone who wants to understand education and think more about what is most important in education.

Merry-Go-Round A Book About Nouns

Making Formative Assessment Work - Effective Practice in the Primary Classroom

This book explains and exemplifies formative assessment in practice. Drawing on incidents and case studies from primary classrooms, it describes and analyses how teachers can use formative assessment to promote learning. It argues the case for formative assessment with reference to socio-cultural perspectives on learning, and examines this in the context of current assessment policy.

Themes addressed include: feedback, the power and roles of learners and teachers in formative assessment, self and peer assessment, and sharing success criteria with learners. Individual chapters explore formative assessment across the curriculum, including literacy, numeracy, art, science, and history. In addition there are two chapters on formative assessment in the early years.

Making Formative Assessment Work provides teachers, student teachers, teacher educators and researchers with a sophisticated grasp of issues in formative assessment and how they relate to the improvement of pupil learning.

Language Use in the Two-Way Classroom - Bilingual Education and Bilingualism Series

Based on an extended ethnographic study of a dual language (Spanish-English) Kindergarten, this book takes a critical look at children’s linguistic (and non-linguistic) interactions and the ways that teaching design can help or hinder language development.

With a focus on official "Spanish time", it explores the particular challenges of supporting the minority language use as well as the teacher’s strategies for doing so. How can teachers design educational practice that takes into consideration broader forces of language hegemony as well as children’s immediate interests?

The numerous rich examples of more and less effective strategies and practices within a variety of instructional contexts make this book essential reading for educators, parents, students and researchers interested in second language education. DePalma's findings will have important implications for program design, interventions, curriculum and instructional practices in second language learning programs.

Language Knowledge for Primary Teachers 4th Edition

Teaching children to develop as language users is one of the most important tasks of a primary school teacher. However, many trainee teachers begin their careers with a low knowledge base.

It reveals how an explicit knowledge of language can enrich their own and their children’s spoken English. It will give teachers confidence in developing children’s enjoyment and comprehension of reading and writing so children can use their language skills in the real world.

Take the German word Mappe. 'Map' exists in English but, while you are talking about something to put papers in, your Englishspeaking business contact thinks you mean a large piece of paper with roads and towns on it (Landkarte).

The correct English word for Mappe in this particular case is 'folder'. Other examples are Gift/gift, Kredit/credit, Fabrik/fabric. You will find a list of the more frequently heard false friends in the latter half of this book.
