A Teachers Grammar The Central Problems of English - Language Teaching Publications Series

It is unusual among grammar books, in that it has been written so that, rather than being used only for reference, its chapters can be read. Each chapter represents a coherent, and developing argument, exemplified by reference to an enormous number of examples.

For native speakers of English, it provides an invaluable and clear insight into the way of looking at English which is essential if the material is to be presented to someone whose native language is not English. Native speakers simply do not think of the Primary Distinctions which the author introduces in chapter 2, but it is these distinctions which underlie many of the grammatical choices which are intrinsic to English.

For the non-native speaker, the book provides a wealth of detailed information and examples, but more importantly demonstrates some of the hierarchically more important distinctions of English, and shows how these fundamental distinctions re-occur in different disguises in quite different parts of the grammatical system. The author constantly has in mind the importance of a coherent over-view of grammar.

A Handbook of Reflective and Experiential Learning Theory and Practice by Jennifer A Moon

This handbook acts as an essential guide to understanding and using reflective and experiential learning - whether it be for personal or professional development, or as a tool for learning. It takes a fresh look at experiential and reflective learning, locating them within an overall theoretical framework for learning and exploring the relationships between different approaches.

As well as the theory, the book provides practical ideas for applying the models of learning, with tools, activities and photocopiable resources which can be incorporated directly into classroom practice. This book is essential reading to guide any teacher, lecturer or trainer wanting to improve teaching and learning

Use It Dont Lose It Daily Language Practice

1-Use It Dont Lose It Daily Language Practice Grade 5
Each book in the Use It! Don't Lose It!: Daily Language Practice series provides review exercises for five days a week for 36 weeks. Five problems a day are provided for Monday through Thursday, with exercises dealing in vocabulary, spelling, mechanics, grammar, literature, research, writing skills, and more.

These exercises come in a variety of formats, including identifying parts of sentences, proofreading/editing sentences, sequencing, and multiple choice, short answer, and definition questions.

Each Friday page has a longer reading comprehension passage with several questions and an additional writing task. The practice in each workbook is set up in a “spiraling sequence,” so students come back to each skill at a regular interval.

The Pinocchio Intermediate Vocabulary Builder by Mark Phillips

Grade 7 Up–Yet another PSAT/SAT verbal study guide cloaked in the guise of a novel. This time, however peculiar, Phillips opts for a retelling of Pinocchio as a starting block for this junior study guide. The tale itself reads quickly not because of great writing, but more likely due to the novel's taking up less than half of the space on each page.

The other half, or three-quarters as the case may be, consists of footnoted definitions of the words embedded in boldface in the text. The kid-friendly definitions are highly readable and useful, though there could be some question of authority since they aren't derived directly from a dictionary.

Each definition is usually followed by an italicized and interesting sentence that further clarifies the word's meaning. All in all, Phillips's attempt is laudable, but the overall work itself is less than effective. This classic tale begs an elementary school audience instead of the targeted middle- or junior high student, especially since more dynamic and age-appropriate topics for this genre can be found elsewhere.
