Sociolinguistics and Language Teaching - The Cambridge Applied Linguistics Series

For each topic, there is an overview of central terms and issues, and a discussion of implications for the language classroom.

Researching and Applying Metaphor - The Cambridge Applied Linguistics Series

Research into metaphor has become one of the fastest-growing and important areas of language research over the past twenty years, and metaphor is now recognized as central to language and language use.

The implications of these findings are only just beginning to be felt in applied linguistics and this book conveys the excitement of metaphor study to a wider applied linguistic audience of researchers, trainers, program developers and postgraduate students.

Practice in a Second Language - The Cambridge Applied Linguistics Series

Practice as a necessity for learning a second language has been a tacit assumption among language teachers for quite some time; however, the concept has not been widely considered from a theoretical perspective until now.

This volume of twelve original articles focuses on the topic, with attention to the four skill areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The contributors explore a number of questions including what kind of practice is most effective, in what contexts, and for what kinds of learners. This text will serve as a valuable resource and reference for second-language educators and researchers alike.

Modelling and Assessing Vocabulary Knowledge - The Cambridge Applied Linguistics Series

Over the last 20 years vocabulary research has grown from a Cinderella subject to a position of some importance. Vocabulary is now considered integral to just about every aspect of language knowledge and is a lively and vital area of research and innovation.

With this development have come standard and widely-used tests, such as vocabulary size and lexical richness measures, and commonly accepted metaphors, such as the mental lexicon as a web of words. Less widely known outside academic circles, however, is the extensive work on learners' lexis and the utility, reliability and validity of the tests we use to measure and investigate it.

This volume brings together contributions from internationally-renowned researchers in this field to explain much of the background to study in this area. It introduces to a wider audience the concerns, the newest approaches and developments in the field of vocabulary research and testing.
