Scholastic Vocabulary-Building Bilingual Mini-Books

More than 80% of the second language learners in the U.S. are Spanish speaking. In order to succeed in school and beyond, these students need to learn English.

This book begins with a snapshot of the research showing the benefits of teaching with cognates closely-related words from different languages, such as lemon and limon for students who are learning English. Putting this research into practice is made easy with the accompanying mini-cognate dictionaries that are flexible enough to use across grade levels.

The Companion to SARAW - An Exercise Workbook

The Companion to SARAW (Speech Assisted Reading and Writing) was developed for an expressed need, to expand the SARAW program's capabilities within the framework of the computer program. With the READ section of SARAW being an untapped wealth of learning opportunities, the stories from READ were taken and from them Directed Reading and Thinking Activities were created.

The same stories were also used to develop basic grammar exercises. Finally, a chapter was designed specifically for volunteer tutors and instructors that includes specific activities that could be done using different sections of the SARAW program. The ultimate goal of this publication is to make learning as easy and interesting as possible.

The Able Writer A Rhetoric and Handbook

1-The Able Writer A Rhetoric and Handbook

The Able Writer: A Rhetoric and Handbook was designed to be used either as a textbook in a college composition course or as a reference for writers. It focuses on language as the stuff of writing (the way pigments are the stuff of painting, and wood and stone are the stuff of sculpture).

Even when discussing pre-writing (the discovery phase of rhetoric) or planning and organization, The Able Writer constantly focuses on examples of texts that result from a certain discovery activity or planning process. In talking about outlines, it walks the reader through the process of creating one. In talking about organization, it provides and analyzes numerous texts that embody the various organizational principles.

The Instructor's Manual contains a sample syllabus, sample writing assignments, comments on how the author teaches each chapter, and answers to the exercises.
