English Literature Writing Guide

What if you had to mark your own essay? What if you were tired and had read fifty essays already that day? At the heart of writing a good English Literature essay is readability.

- Avoid writing an essay that is a regurgitation of facts, lecture notes or other people’s opinions.
- If you wouldn’t want to read your essay, you can be sure that no one else will.

The second important point to bear in mind when writing your English Literature essay is planning. Don’t start writing without a goal or an idea of the key points to cover:

Academic Skills and Learning Centre - Essay Writing Strategies

The Essay Writing Strategies workshop, for undergraduates, is a 3 hour session that covers what markers want, analysing the question, the research and writing process, writing good introductions, paragraphs and conclusions.

Semester 1 and 2 workshops run in O Week and week 1 and then again after the mid-semester break. Please check the website regularly for session times and dates.

Writers Resources From Paragraph to Essay

The best way to learn to write well is through the use of clear examples and abundant practice. WRITER'S RESOURCES: FROM PARAGRAPH TO ESSAY helps develop students' confidence and skills as writers by presenting concepts in simple, clear fashion, and reinforcing them with numerous student peer examples and frequent practice exercises that allow students the opportunity to apply what they have learned.

Using four student peers who share their advice and examples of writing throughout the book, this paragraph-to-essay level text teaches students the fundamentals of the writing process, including paragraph and essay structure and development and rhetorical patterns.

Academic Writing and Publishing - James Hartley

Academic Writing and Publishing will show academics (mainly in the social sciences) how to write and publish research articles. Its aim is to supply examples and brief discussions of recent work in all aspects of the area in short, sharp chapters.

It should serve as a handbook for postgraduates and lecturers new to publishing. The book is written in a readable and lively personal style. The advice given is direct and based on up-to-date research that goes beyond that given in current textbooks. For example, the chapter on titles lists different kinds of titles and their purposes not discussed in other texts. The chapter on abstracts instructs the reader on writing structured abstracts from the start.
